Borri achieves savings for Gateshead Council

Borri Ltd has helped Gateshead Council achieve operational savings of a massive £14,000 per annum by supplying a new UPS solution that will literally pay for itself!

Date: 3 Sep 2012

With increasing pressures being placed on the local authority to improve energy efficiency standards, the Council, which was already experiencing the benefits of operating two of Borri's B9000 250kVA units for its data centre, approached Borri to carry out a technical assessment on another of its existing back-up power systems.

The audit revealed that as the Council's 100kVA UPS units were running at low loads they were therefore only achieving 35 percent efficiency. With huge amounts of energy being wasted, Borri put forward recommendations for the large UPS systems to be replaced by a smaller transformerless 20kVA solution, which could improve efficiency to above 90 percent.

Borri also provided detailed calculations to support its technical findings, which outlined the projected total cost of ownership. These financial estimations were presented by the Council as part of its bid to secure funding from SEELS 4 through Salix Finance Ltd, an independent not for profit organisation working with the public sector bodies to invest in energy efficiency technologies, whose finance packages can be repaid inline with the actual energy savings being achieved.

Installed and commissioned by Borri's team of expert engineers, the new B8000 20kVA ECO UPS system is now supporting the Gateshead Council's head office IT infrastructure. All work was carried out with minimal downtime, where final connections were made during a weekend. Borri also removed and disposed of the old equipment, which helped to ensure that the complete project was carried out seamlessly.

For added peace of mind all of Borri's UPS solutions come with a three year parts warranty. The Tyne and Wear local authority has also chosen to support this with an all-encompassing maintenance package, so will have nothing to pay for the first three years.

Gateshead County Council's building and services engineer, John Wilkinson said: "Borri has provided us with exceptional service from the initial technical audit through to full installation.

"The recommendations from them have proved invaluable and we have also been thoroughly impressed with the high quality design of the UPS units and their flexible operational functionality.

"The cost savings we have been able to make since the installation have earned us a letter of commendation in recognition of our exemplary achievement from Salix. This would not have been possible without the help from Borri and we are extremely grateful.

"Gateshead Council is committed to utilising the monies from the recycling fund to achieve long term savings. Following the successful installation and demonstration of efficiency savings

gained through Borri's UPS solutions, we have subsequently ordered further three phase equipment from them to help us reach even greater efficiency and financial savings."

Manufactured to the highest technical standards, Borri's B8031 UPS series provides less than three percent harmonic distortion by integrating sophisticated Isolated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT) and digital processing (DSP). The UPS units provide flexible operation and are a versatile solution where increased backup power may be required in the future as up to eight machines can be configured into a parallel system.
The West Yorkshire based company provides a nationwide support and maintenance service for all UPS and generators. It specialises in the supply, replacement, installation and disposal of batteries, electrical installation, commissioning, load bank testing, hire services and relocation projects.
