Unite Technologies unveils Envirohawk2 – Climate Control for Data Centres

Optimises temperature and humidity levels for improved resilience and reduced energy costs.

Date: 2 Aug 2012

Unite Technologies, the data centre power and energy management specialist, has announced EnviroHawk2, its new real-time environment monitoring solution for data centres.

By monitoring temperature and humidity in real-time combined with pre-set alarm thresholds, EnviroHawk2 ensures data centre and facilities managers receive advance warning of any environmentally-related issues to allow the necessary preventative or remedial action to be taken. This helps reduce the risk of downtime by increasing IT equipment reliability and resilience while reducing overall operating costs and emissions through improved energy efficiency.

In addition to monitoring air flow, temperature and humidity conditions, making it well-suited for cold aisle containment, EnviroHawk2 measures all parameters that may contribute to the data centre’s environmental performance and safety. These include status of open/close door contact switches, smoke, water and shock detection.

By tracking environmental status at the rack, row or cabinet level, EnviroHawk2 is also very complementary to branch circuit monitoring (BCM) initiatives which aim to pinpoint the power usage effectiveness (PUE) and energy consumption of specific systems. The flexibility of EnviroHawk2’s design also allows it to connect with third party power strips (PDUs) which do not have in-built environmental monitoring capabilities.

Envirohawk2 Key Features

ü ü 1 U Mounting form factor
(dimensions: D x 115mm W x 483mm H x 44mm)
ü ü Supports up to 48 input monitoring channels from a single IP address
ü ü 24 Sensor input ports supporting: Temperature sensors; Humidity Sensors; Open/Close Contact sensors. Door switch; Smoke Detector; Water rope; Water contact sensor; 10VDC sensor inputs (Air Flow)
ü ü Two independent input C14 mains power supplies for power redundancy
ü ü Battery backed real time clock and support for NTP network time synchronisation
ü ü Configurable SNMP and EMAIL alarm messages
ü ü Built in NVRAM local audit log and optional remote SYSLOG audit trail supported
ü ü Web interface via HTTP or secure HTTPS
ü ü Power: 110VAC ~ 230VAC, 40W Max

“Temperature and humidity are critical factors determining the reliability and energy consumption of legacy and new build data centres,” said Colin Dean, sales director, Unite Technologies. “Too high, and there is the risk of incurring damaging downtime, while too low points to over-cooling which is expensive, wasteful and environmentally irresponsible. By providing a holistic real-time view of all environmental elements impacting on the data centre, EnviroHawk2 ensures managers can take precise control of temperature and humidity for the overall benefit of the entire estate.”

The status of the input channels available with EnviroHawk2 can be monitored using the built in web interface. Alternatively, the unit may be configured as a SNMP agent and use a Network Management System (NMS) to collect data and display alarms generated. Four alarm thresholds may be independently set for each input. Alarm conditions are notified to a remote management station using SNMP trap alerts as well as icon indicators on the web interface.

Two 24 channel EnviroHawk2 units may be used together, where one unit is connected to the Network as a Master unit, and a second EnviroHawk2 (slave) unit is connected to the Master EnviroHawk2 unit via short Link cable. This combination provides 48 sensor inputs from a single IP address. All configuration and monitoring is performed from the Master unit.
