This scheme provides organisations which are operating data centres with an independent assessment and verifiable evidence that their data centre is following energy efficiency best practice. CEEDA is based on the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres which the Institute was the first professional organisation to endorse in 2009. The Award, based on findings in the assessment, takes the form of gold, silver or bronze energy efficiency ratings which are reviewed on an annual basis in the form of surveillance audits.
The organisations are lead adopters of CEEDA, with the Co-operative receiving a silver award and the Sanger Institute receiving a bronze award. The CEEDA award includes a comprehensive report and action plan detailing the energy saving potential in the data centre.
Martyn Lambert, Director at the Institute explains: “It gives me great pleasure to announce the first two organisations who have gone through the CEEDA assessment. As lead adopters, both the Co-operative and the Sanger Institute are addressing this incredibly important issue, not only for themselves, but also for the industry as a whole. As the Chartered Institute for IT, we are determined to develop solutions that help the IT industry improve its green credentials.”
DatacenterDynamics (DCD) carries out the data centre assessments on behalf of the Institute to standards developed at the EU Commission and the Institute.
Dave Murrell, Head of Servers, Storage, Desktops and Data Centre at the Co-operative Group says: “We are delighted to have been involved in this project from the outset. We are committed to ensuring that our operations are as efficient and ‘green’ as we can make them. To have received the silver CEEDA award from BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, is the first step in ensuring that our data centre is efficient. We will now be reading the report with great interest to find out how we can improve further.”
“We are delighted to be recognised for our data centre’s energy efficiency,” says Phil Butcher, Director of ICT at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. “We are committed to minimising our data centre’s carbon footprint.”
