Dell KACE says that SEGA® Europe Limited, the European distribution arm of one of the world’s leading interactive entertainment companies, has implemented its systems management appliances for controlling and managing desktop services at the company’s offices in London. With the Dell KACE K1000 Systems Management Appliance, SEGA® Europe has seen a dramatic improvement in how it can maintain and update its desktop PC environments while reducing the potential time required to complete software audits from hours down to minutes.
Dell KACE is providing support to SEGA® Europe’s staff which is responsible for managing day-to-day activities associated with running the business, from finance and sales through to marketing and public relations, as well as covering quality assurance and testing of games and services before they are released. The QA and testing teams are split into shifts, providing around the clock support in the run up to major releases.
“The Dell KACE Appliance centralises our asset tracking, software and driver updates, and automates the installation of patches to desktop machines. As a result, we can save a lot of time and reduce the impact of patching across the user community,” commented Luis de Mendonca, IT Manager at SEGA Europe. “The appliance also makes it simple to track licenses and software usage patterns: we can see the number of machines that have packages like Microsoft Project or Visio installed in minutes based on the automated reports that the appliance can run, and also how often those applications are actually used. This makes it easier for us to justify investments in software licenses and to reduce spending where it is not required.”
The Dell KACE Systems Management Appliance provides a single source of updates for the desktop machines that SEGA Europe has in place. The majority of these machines are Dell desktops, but the QA team also has a wide variety of other manufacturer PCs in place for testing. With such a mixed environment to support, the SEGA® Europe IT team makes use of Smart Tags on the KACE Appliance to track hardware components and provide the right driver and software updates as needed. “Using Smart Tags is really useful for us, as we have a diverse mix of chipsets, graphics cards and other hardware within the QA department PCs. We can track these components and make sure they are kept up to date easily,” explained de Mendonca. “This saves a lot of IT staff time, as well as letting the QA team concentrate on their testing activities.”
SEGA® Europe is planning to use the in-built desktop power management functionality of the Dell KACE Appliance in future to reduce power consumption across the company’s desktops. This will automatically shut down machines that are left on overnight to reduce electricity consumption, and boot these desktops up in the morning in preparation for employees coming in.
The Dell KACE Systems Management Appliance provides a complete set of IT administration and systems management tools in one appliance that is easy to install and simple to use. By using this approach, companies can reduce their IT overheads and save both time and money.
